Between Society and Ummah: A Comparative Analysis of Concepts

Society has become a central theme that has gained attention in recent centuries. The West brought a positivistic paradigm to research society to science, by building methodologies so as to form its own paradigm in researching society. Because of that lack of value, some Muslim scholars feel the need to revisit some key concepts in social science that may be contrary to Islamic values. This short paper at least attempts to elaborate on what and how the concept of society as a term is often discussed in social science disciplines. Then look further as far as what the problems contained in the concept, and look for the equivalent of the concept in the Islamic religious tradition that is the ummah that is in accordance with the correct view of life. This paper attempts to justify by islamization so that science is always appropriate and based on the Islamic perspective, including in the description of the concept of the Last society in terms of change. The ummah will always change. The existence of the badawa theory and hadarah from Ibn Khaldun shows that. But the point of emphasis is, the concept of the ummah does not change completely, but changes in determination. In addition, the change of the ummah is a change to achieve one goal. Different things with society that really changed completely according to the environment.
